Little Machining Projects - Sometimes The Funnest - Custom Wing Nuts For A Double Start Nut Media
Published: 2 years ago
Little manual machining project with my Jet JMD-18 Mill Drill. I needed to make 2 small double start nuts finger adjustable. The original plastic knobs for these nuts broke so I modified some wing nuts to hold them and make them finger adjustable again. I was not able to locate any double start wing nuts.
You don't find double start threads often, they are a great way to cut a shallow thread with a fast pitch. Normally you need to cut a deep thread to get a fast pitch and for a small part you don't have enough material. The most common place to find a multi start thread is in your kitchen on a milk jug. They are usually 4 or 6 start threads to allow the milk cap to be turned all the way down in only a quarter to half a turn.
These little projects in the shop are great for problem solving and getting creative finding a way to make the part you need. I also show how to probe the center of a circle with a Heimer 3D Taster and the Newall DP700 DRO.
Thanks for watching!
